Microlearning & The Benefits of Going Small

Kelley Tenny

We have moved into a time of "less is more" and the world of eLearning is no exception.

Now is a great time to think about delivering small, focused doses of learning content that can be consumed in a short period of time. This type of learning is perfect for today's busy learner who wants to stay on top of their game without having to sacrifice too much time or energy.

This is where microlearning comes in.

Microlearning is a learning trend where smaller doses of information are consumed at a time. This is beneficial for the learner because it allows them to focus on one concept at a time, which in turn helps them to retain the information better.

When it comes to creating content or teaching others, microlearning can be extremely advantageous.

According to Origin Learning, our brains are wired to learn at intervals in stretches of three to seven minutes which aligns with the working memory capacity and attention span of humans, especially modern-day learners. Consider the types of video that are gaining the most traction today - Instagram Reels, TikTok videos and YouTube Shorts. Various studies have shown that microlearning videos are the ideal way to present educational content to learners.

Flexibility

This type of learning offers greater flexibility for learners as well. Microlearning helps to break information down into manageable chunks which can be more easily digested. This is perfect for those who want or need to learn at their own pace. Additionally, if someone struggles with attention span or focus, microlearning can be a great way to help them stay on track.

Motivation

Microlearning increases motivation. One of the challenges with a full length course is that it tends to be time consuming, requiring learners to carve out large amounts of time in order to get through the content. With microlearning, users can get through the shorter content and feel a sense of accomplishment. This in turn will generate more motivation to continue through until the end, increasing your success rate as well. It's a win-win for all.

Some things to think about when getting started:

Find topics that can be taught in a short and concise way. Things like processes or systems are great for microlearning. Think five 10-minute videos instead of one 50 minute video.

  3. Microlearning is a great way to present educational content in a way that is manageable for the learner. It helps to break information down into smaller chunks which can be more easily digested. Additionally, microlearning increases
motivation and helps the learner stay on track. If you are looking for a flexible and successful way to educate others, microlearning may be the answer for you!
